This small garden building in Belgium has been transformed into a house by a modern minimalist glass extension. The architects have retained much of the original materials in the new house, but have inserted a new steel finished mezzanine level, staircase and bath. The result is an inspiring project illustrating the potential of a very limited space.

This house is a reconstruction of a rural ruin into a new weekend retreat, within the Cavado River and its tributary. The small plot is located in a protected natural area, so the new building could not exceed the dimensions of the existing ruin and trees had to be preserved. The house takes the form of a large cantelever with a ply interior and concrete finishes externally.

The interior spaces of this house in Seoul are created by excavated volumes; the kitchen, dining and living rooms are interlocking, forming a sequence of views and body positions.

The interior of the house is far from monolithic. Indeed, much of it is interlaced and connected through surprising angles.

The house may be a block of steel, but it is a “lady” nonetheless.

Studio Weave Architects have created an enchanting hut for relaxing and enjoying views at Keilder. The hut takes a familiar form - that of a traditional home - yet is of a more intimate scale. Dublin architects TAKA have created a mews house that employs a variety of brick bedding techniques adjacent to an existing Victorian home in Dublin. The attention to detail in the house is refreshing, with an array of tactile surfaces and a restrained palette of hues from complimentary materials. The rear façade is a mesh of brickwork, formed with projecting bricks and resultant holes, allowing ventilation and a changing pattern of natural light throughout the day.

This restrained timber and concrete house sits on a secluded rural site above the city of Los Angeles. The home is arranged around a series of courtyards, each with fantastic views over the city. It has a number of sustainable features, including a natural ventilation strategy, energy efficient equipment, and uses reclaimed materials such as recycled cotton insulation. The existing two bedroom cottage on the site was incorporated into the new property as the living and dining room, so the newly built spaces are, in planning terms, simply a grand extension of the previous home.

This house for a film maker occupies the top two floors of a victorian clog making factory in South London. The architects have created a modern domestic space with timber, brick and in-situ cast concrete. The bathroom is designed simply as a piece of furniture occupying the main volume of the house, reinforcing the spacious feel of the home. An extension into the existing roof of the building creates a new floor with terraces overlooking the city.

In this carefully designed extension to a property in Hackney, the kitchen and garden area are connected by a seamless concrete floor, giving the internal space an external character. A modern structural glass window projects into the garden - the expansive use of glass throughout the project allows light to flood into the previously dark interior space of the Victorian house.

This extension to a rural house in Belgium extends over an existing garden lake. The designers, Wim Goes Architectuur have created a space that provides shelter and a sense of enclosure, yet retains a strong relationship with the garden. Its structural timber strip facade allows a constant garden view and is permeable to the elements. The timber will age to a natural silver colour over time, relating to the hues of the existing house.

This house for Anish Kapoor by Tony Fretton Architects was carefully designed to suit the artist's requirements. A large central space was created which could be opened up to the rest of the house. The spaces were intended to be flowing, without the compartmentalised feel of traditional homes. The house has large glazed lightwells to provide natural light on the tight 8m wide site, and structural gymnastics are provided by cantilevered staircases. The building takes on the feel of an austere gallery, seemingly appropriate for spaces that will be filled with the owner's creations.

This new house in the north of Japan is built on a hill top site over looking the city of Sapporo. The core-ten clad facades of the home have rapidly taken on rust patterning from precipitation, suggesting solidarity and a long previous existence. The passing of time engraved in the public facades is contrasted with the crisp, modern lines of the minimal interior of the house. The architect has pushed the most private spaces such as the meditation room to the interior of the property, creating a gradual transition between public and most private. The details and material were decided whilst the building was on site, resulting in a very particular and creative feel to the interior spaces.

This house in St John's Wood, London replaces two previous homes on a triangular plot. The 49m long low build property has four bedrooms, a basement swimming pool and open plan living / dining spaces that overlook a carefully manicured garden. Externally, it is finished in zinc, render, glass and English bond stock brickwork. The architect has designed a contemporary, unobtrusive facade to the adjacent mews street that provides internal privacy.

This house in Tokyo, designed by Yasuhiro Yamashita is an elegant expression of modern urban house design. The architect has created formally inventive spaces with bespoke furniture that becomes part of the home rather than a distinct entity. The polished floor of the living space provides strong reflected light from a relatively small first floor window, whilst a minimal colour palatte in the top floor bathroom creates a calming space for relaxation.

This house by architect Terry Pawson is situated on a quiet road in West London. Black slate, mild steel oak and concrete are used in the building, which received a RIBA award in 2002.
